Technique and Anna Sokolow Repertory with Jim May
Anna Sokolow’s technique, method dancing, demands a careful balance of movement, musicality, and drama, which provides the framework for her determined quest for truth in artistry. This workshop will give students an introduction to the principles and methodology required to perform Anna Sokolow’s works. Led by artistic director Jim May, who received a Bessie award as “premiere leading man, an actor-dancer of extraordinary range and scope of character, in the living theater of Anna Sokolow,” this one day workshop is a unique opportunity to challenge creativity, and explore one’s voice in the artistic community.
Jim May Biography
Jim May, founding director of The Sokolow Theatre/Dance Ensemble, was a devoted disciple of Anna Sokolow for 35 years and co-artistic director of her dance company, Players’ Project. He has developed a dance technique for teaching both dancers and actors Sokolow’s unique balance of emotional physicality and individual artistry. His aim is to expand the art of dance to include the other arts (music, theater, painting, literature), working toward a progressive new style of theater/dance. Mr. May also danced with the Limón Company under Jose Limón’s direction and as a soloist under Carla Maxwell’s direction, the Ruth Currier Company, and as a principal dancer with the Danny Lewis company. Mr. May has been faculty at SUNY Purchase, Juilliard School of Music, and Princeton University, as well as at the Limón Institute for decades. He taught extensively in Taiwan, where he founded the company Dance Forum Taipei, and in Mexico at Central de Investigacion Corografica. Mr. May awards include a 1996 Fulbright to Mexico, the 1999 Bessie Award for lifetime achievement, and in 2024 Mr. May was presented with the Martha Hill Lifetime Achievement Award.
