Anna Sokolow’s epic work, Odes (1965), is a luminous vision of humanity, inspired by the turbulent world of Greek mythology. Odes requires over 20 dancers, so the Sokolow Theatre/Dance Ensemble began another of its many collaborations with Kanopy Dance of Madison, WI, in the summer of 2025. The collaboration will come to fruition in April, 2026, when ST/DE and Kanopy Dance will perform Odes together in a program titled “Divine Mythologies” at the Overture Center in Madison and the MMAC Theater in New York City.
The program will also feature Ekstasi, choreographed by Kanopy Dance Co-Artistic Director Lisa Thurrell, a celestial journey inspired by St. Peter’s Basilica, the cathedral of art in the Vatican City. Ekstasi chronicles the ecstasy and the agony of pursuing a divine path or transcendence. And Kanopy Dance Co-Artistic Director Robert E. Cleary presents Transformations, a tumultuous yet beautiful passage through change and growth of an individual spirit.

“Odes” re-creates a world haunted by nature’s mysteries. In this open landscape, the gods might reach out at any time to snatch their prey.

About Kanopy Dance
Kanopy Dance Company, a quintessential modern dance company, is a resident company of the Overture Center for the Arts in Madison, WI. While the Kanopy Dance Company informs its works through its roots in the Martha Graham tradition, the company has developed its own brand, shaping an exciting new dimension and visual language to advance American modern dance.
Kanopy’s artistic directors, Robert E. Cleary, former dancer for Ballet Minnesota and Minnesota Dance Theater, and Lisa Thurrell, who trained and danced with the Martha Graham Dance Company, cultivate the dynamic growth of modern dance—establishing creative artistic benchmarks—by training professional dancers, choreographing original works and collaborating with internationally recognized guest artists.
