The Sokolow Theatre/Dance Ensemble’s favorite annual event: Close Quarters at the fabulous Slipper Room on the Lower East Side in New York City.
This year’s program journeyed into the realm of dreams, ranging from the nightmarish to the giddily joyful. Artistic Director Samantha Géracht and Associate Artistic Director Lauren Naslund dug into the archives to find intriguing works by Anna Sokolow that have not been performed in decades. And every company member had a featured role new to them. There were plenty of new challenges to go around, which made for an exciting and surprising program.
Newly unearthed works included an excerpt from Everything Must Go, “Adventure 2” from Opus Jazz 1958, and an early version of “The Pond and The Cage” from Scenes from the Music of Charles Ives. Also on the program, highlighting the theatrical side of Sokolow’s work, are excerpts from From the Diaries of Franz Kafka, featuring actor Gabe Girson in Sokolow’s dramatization of the existentialist writer’s life and stories, dramatic solos from Lyric Suite and Homage to Edgar Allan Poe, and the Tiger Rag from A Short Lecture and Demonstration on the Evolution of Ragtime.
