With joy, the Sokolow Theatre/Dance Ensemble will return to the stage on February 18-20, 2022 in Reflections + Dreams, presented by Kanopy Dance at the Overture Center for the Arts in Madison, WI, in a program also including Kanopy Dance Corps and renowned dancer and choreographer Clarence Brooks.
The dancers of ST/DE will perform Ballade, Anna Sokolow’s lyrical exploration of young love; solo “The Pond and The Cage” from Scenes from the Music of Charles Ives, Sokolow’s poetic expressions of human yearning; and the passionate “The Lovers” from Magritte, Magritte.
ST\DE dancers will be joined by Kanopy Dance Corps members in “The Unanswered Question,” also from Scenes from the Music of Charles Ives.
Clarence Brooks will perform the emotional masterwork Mourner’s Bench, by pioneering Black American choreographer Talley Beatty. Mourner’s Bench (1947), with its themes of oppression, struggle, and transcendence, was inspired by Howard Fast’s novel Southern Landscape.
Dancers of Kanopy Dance Corps will perform Partita & Chorales, choreographed by Lisa Thurrell (Artistic Director of Kanopy Dance with Robert E. Cleary). Partita & Chorales—to Johann Sebastian “Bach’s Partita in D minor for Violin” and “Chorales for Four Voices”—was inspired not only by the profound beauty of the music itself, but also by the intricate theme and variation, and the hidden numerology and codes, as epitaph for Bach’s first wife.
