Anna Sokolow’s Frida and Magritte, Magritte
A surreal theater/dance experience
November 9-19, 2023
In the Eye of a Dream, our new immersive production of Anna Sokolow’s tributes to two surrealist painters, played to sold-out houses at Theaterlab in New York City, hosted by TLAB Shares.
In Frida, an intimate portrait based on Sokolow’s personal relationship with Frida Kahlo, Sokolow created a multimedia homage to her friend’s internal life and public persona. Guest artist Christine Dakin, former artistic director of the Martha Graham Company, danced the emotionally complex title role.
Sokolow’s masterwork Magritte, Magritte sets the paradoxical paintings of Surrealist Rene Magritte into action, with text by John White, Paul Éluard, and Edgar Allan Poe. Guest artist Clarence Brooks joins us in the comically insane role of “The Threatened Assassin.” The mysterious, sensuous solo “Discovery” was danced to its original music by Ravel for the first time in over 50 years, coached by original cast member, Tonia Shimin.
Immersive video projections designed by Kathleen Kelley of Proteo Media and lighting by Saúl Ulerio created a luminous environment within Theaterlab’s unique intimate white-box space.
