What’s going on

WE ARE NOW IN REHEARSAL FOR OUR MARCH 2016 SEASON AND NEED YOUR HELP!

On March 9-13, the Sokolow Theatre/Dance Ensemble will present three major works by Anna Sokolow and the premiere of a new work by guest artist Rae Ballard. These theatre/dance works transport the audience through the breadth and depth of the human experience.

• Ride the Culture Loop (1975) captures the restless search for meaning among the youth of the 1970’s, veering wildly from inward contemplation to irrepressible exuberance.

• Kurt Weill (1988) depicts life during a time of crisis, in which a community of people still love, fight, struggle, and dream.

• Steps of Silence (1968) is Ms. Sokolow’s shattering vision of people denied their humanity; even more relevant today than when it was first created.

• In Rae Ballard’s We Remember, three women come together to support each other in the aftermath of a shared experience.

The Sokolow Ensemble, under the artistic directorship of long-time Sokolow associate Jim May, is dedicated to insuring that the works of Anna Sokolow, one of history’s most iconoclastic and original modern dance choreographers, are kept alive into the future. This season, the Sokolow works are being directed by veteran company members, and we have welcomed several wonderful new dancers into the cast.

The concert will be presented in association with the Dance Series at The 14th Street Y in New York City.

The Ensemble

The Sokolow Theatre/Dance Ensemble is dedicated to recreating works choreographed by Anna Sokolow, continuing her teachings, and furthering her artistic vision. Ms. Sokolow encouraged artistic growth and the Sokolow Ensemble carries on this tradition by offering its expertise and experience to new choreographers who are interested in multi-arts projects.

“Evidence of such purposeful homage by dancers to masters of their craft is hard to find in today’s multi-faceted dance world, where commercial intentions predominate.” Deborah Jowitt

What We Need

What you will see on stage is the culmination of many hours of rehearsal, costume design, lighting and multimedia design, administrative work, and much, much more. With your donation, you become an essential part of our process by helping us cover these costs.

Your donation will support the following expenses:

$5350+ Rent: Rehearsal space, theater, and related expenses

$1000+ Costumes

$3000+ Personnel: Lighting, sound, production, public relations, and more

$5000+ Dancers’ salaries….what?? Did you think they worked for free??? 😉

$4000+…..all the other stuff: insurance, royalties, travel, etc.

As you can see, our Kickstarter goal will cover only a portion of our costs. We need your help to surpass our goal in order to bring this ambitious program into reality.
