What’s going on

WE ARE NOW IN REHEARSAL FOR OUR MARCH 2018 SEASON AND NEED YOUR HELP!

“I think that the thing I feel most about in life is the depth of deep truth. You know there are all kinds of truths. There are small ones, insignificant ones, or there are many profound ones. Now in art, great art, you have deep, deep truths or deep conceptions of truth…This is what I believe.” – Anna Sokolow

It has been an exciting year for the Sokolow Theatre Dance Ensemble. Samantha Geracht has taken over as artistic director, veteran company members are directing, coaching, and teaching Ms. Sokolow’s works, and the company now has a dedicated cast of 14 dancers. We are also joined this season by guest artists Clarence Brooks, Jennifer Conley and David Glista.

Too many of Ms. Sokolow’s dances have virtually disappeared and we are once again researching fuzzy film footage for dances that ought to be carefully reconstructed. This year we will present Ms. Sokolow’s Moods for the first time since 1975. The dance is a gem, and we look forward to sharing it with you. All of these theatre/dance works transport the audience through the breadth and depth of the human experience, and this season, March 8-11, 2018 promises to reveal the timeless truths of Ms. Sokolow’s dances.

Dreams — driven by Anna’s nightmares of the Holocaust, this masterpiece penetrates the most terrifying realms of human experience, demanding that we see the humanity of persecutions victims.

Moods — this long-lost work, choreographed in 1975 to Gyorgyi Ligeti’s 10 Pieces for Wind Quintet, is a journey through inner states from serene to violent, from exuberant to crushed, from struggle to acceptance—a quest into darkness in order to find the light.

Preludes — based in social dance of the 30s, to music by George Gershwin, this work recalls the simple elegance and restrained sensuality of that time.

We will be joined by guest artists Jennifer Conley, who will perform Anna Sokolow’s Poem, and Clarence Brooks, who will perform in Dreams and in Sweet in the Morning, choreographed by Leni Wylliams.

The Ensemble

The Sokolow Theatre/Dance Ensemble is dedicated to recreating works choreographed by Anna Sokolow, continuing her teachings, and furthering her artistic vision. Ms. Sokolow encouraged artistic growth and the Sokolow Ensemble carries on this tradition by offering its expertise and experience to new choreographers who are interested in multi-arts projects.

“Evidence of such purposeful homage by dancers to masters of their craft is hard to find in today’s multi-faceted dance world, where commercial intentions predominate.” Deborah Jowitt

What We Need

What you will see on stage is the culmination of many hours of rehearsal, costume design, lighting and multimedia design, administrative work, and much, much more. With your donation, you are an essential part of preserving and protecting Ms. Sokolow’s important body of work.

An average season costs at least $15,000. We are hoping to raise at least $10,000 but WE ARE ASKING $6000 IN ORDER TO PAY OUR DANCERS, covering their rehearsal time and performances. Please help us achieve this goal and surpass it, any donation counts. THANK YOU

Your donation will support the following expenses:

  • $5350+ Rent: Rehearsal space, theater, and related expenses
  • $1000+ Costumes
  • $3000+ Personnel: Lighting, sound, production, public relations, and more
  • $6000+ Dancers’ salaries
  • $3000+…..all the other stuff: insurance, royalties, travel, etc.

As you can see, our Kickstarter goal will cover only a portion of our costs. We need your help to surpass our goal in order to bring this ambitious program into reality.
